Accelerating sustainable agriculture at scale –
Creating value from a brighter future

From Farmer to Food Chain

Carbosuelo harnesses the climate impact of Conservation Agriculture and brings it to life, at scale.

We help growers moving away from conventional farming, and improving the quality and biodiversity of their soils. By reducing their emissions and maximising carbon capture in the ground, the growers gain new revenue from the carbon and biodiversity markets through our high integrity carbon credit programme. We bring the sustainable agronomy expertise needed for our grower partners to be successful and support them throughout the transition.

Partner value creation

We connect, support and deliver impact value to our customers at each segment of the sustainable food supply chain.

NBS Investors

Growers are operating in a challenging environment, with reducing farm subsidies, dropping crop prices, lack of qualified labour and climate-induced droughts. With Carbosuelo, they get expert support to adopt more sustainable, resilient and profitable farming models and access new revenue streams.

Carbosuelo offers:

Agronomic support and advice

Additional revenue from carbon and biodiversity contracts

Financial benefits from the carbon market upturn

The Food Chain players are expected to take ownership of the decarbonization beyond their own operations and products, but are often challenged to do so, due to disrupted supply chains, lack of expertise or reach to their feedstock producers. Carbosuelo offers Scope 3 insetting solutions, aligned with SBTI accounting, to address this

Carbosuelo offers:

Supply shed based Scope 3 insetting solutions

Reach and expertise to drive decarbonisation of feedstock origination

Responding to increasing demand, commodity traders are introducing a low carbon commodity portfolio. Most often not controlling the actual source of supply, an alternative carbon accounting mechanism is required. Carbosuelo offers supply shed based carbon sourcing under the evolving SustainCert – VCI accounting standard.

Carbosuelo offers:

Supply shed based Scope 3 insetting solutions

Reach and expertise to drive decarbonisation of feedstock origination

Nature Based Removal Solutions have the fastest climate impact available today. High integrity certified Carbon Removal Units from agriculture have an increasing price trend, improve food security and bring social, water and biodiversity cobenefits. Carbosuelo brings together long time agsector expertise and carbon competence to drive focussed impact and reliable high value asset creation.

Carbosuelo offers:

High integrity carbon operations to global certification standards

Bankable assets

How does the programme work?

The local Carbosuelo representative meets with growers, talks about conservation agriculture, and informs about the programme. He/she prescreens interested growers for eligibility, and assesses their carbon delivery potential based on agronomical soil models and the recommended practices. Contract terms are explained and growers signed-up. An agronomical baseline based on farm data is established and often soil samples are taken as evidence of the starting point.

Transitioning to conservation agriculture from conventional practices generally takes 2-4 years. During this period access to local, experienced conservation agriculture agronomy expertise is important to guide, explain and predict what will be happening in the field and how to address change issues. Access to continuous expert advice also helps to quickly reach the highest possible sequestration rates, minimise grower abortion rates and thus deliver the highest impact return. Carbosuelo provides recognised world-class conservation agriculture expertise and has a focused grower support model providing the needed locally relevant agronomical support, setting our partner growers up for success.

Yearly field reports provided by the growers are combined with satellite remote sensing data and scientifically recognised soil modelling to calculate the carbon sequestered in the soil. Data is externally validated, audited and sometimes additional soil samples are taken in the field to verify the results. The number of CRUs (Carbon Removal Units) is determined.

Once verified externally according to the certification rules, the CRUs (Carbon Removal Units) are issued by the external certifier and can then be transacted to the paying user. The grower will get its share of the CRU sales value once a year, with exception of the first years, when no CRUs can be issued. Carbosuelo however offers the grower the option to receive prepayments also during the first years, which then are netted against the final payment from the CRU sales once transacted.

Through a so-called “supply shed” approach, the CRUs (Carbon Removal Units) from Carbosuelo are intended to be used to Scope 3 inset traded commodities, or food chain feedstock, which originate from the same region/segment as Carbosuelos CRUs. SBTI-aligned carbon accounting methodologies to this purpose are being developed by SustainCert-VCI, where Carbosuelo is a contributing member.
